Banff National Park, Alberta (October 17, 2013) – As the first dustings of snow crown the Rocky Mountain peaks, the communities of Banff and Lake Louise are promising a winter season of new and innovative programming knee-deep in powder, parties and performances.
Kicking off with Parks Canada and CBCMusic.ca’s unprecedented “Quietest. Concert. Ever.” featuring multiplatinum-selling Canadian pop band Hedley on October 26, tourism industry partners in Banff National Park are touting an exciting start to winter with a hefty schedule of events to welcome visitors to the ultimate Canadian winter wonderland.
“Banff National Park is truly at its best in winter and we are excited to kick the season off with this unique and pioneering event,” said Julie Canning, President & CEO of Banff Lake Louise Tourism. “With the incredible support of our partners, this winter promises to delight visitors from start to finish.”
The Hedley win-to-get-in concert will be the first of its kind to take place in Canada when all concert-goers don wireless Sennheiser headphones transmitting the band’s performance in surreal detail over a dedicated radio frequency. The band will be performing all new songs from their upcoming album Wild Life. Adding to uniqueness of the event, tickets can only be won through social media contests, giveaways and Banff-based hotels offering weekend packages for the show. Fans should follow Parks Canada’s website or Twitter feed (www.pc.gc.ca, @ParksCanada) to find out more about contests and giveaways. Tickets can also be won by visiting the band’s website, www.hedleyonline.com or Twitter feed, @Hedleyonline, following instructions when prompted.
October 26 also marks the start of The Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival which will run through November 3 at The Banff Centre. Featuring the world’s best mountain films, books and speakers, the festival offers a diverse range of experiences for armchair adventurers and weekend warriors alike.
Immediately following the slated opening of all three Banff National Park ski resorts in early November, the town of Banff and hamlet of Lake Louise will play host to Bon Appétit Banff, the annual culinary festival offering reduced, prix-fixe dining at 30 of the communities’ best restaurants, November 14 – 24.
From November 29 through December 22, the Winterstart Festival turns up the heat on the 2013-2014 ski & snowboard season as the park’s three world-class ski resorts - Mount Norquay, Sunshine Village and Lake Louise - welcome alpine enthusiasts to their revitalized terrain and tube parks, refreshed dining options, exciting new mobile apps and events, including a mountain yoga retreat and the FIS Snowboard Cross World Cup.
The Lake Louise Ski Resort will once again welcome the world’s top alpine racers and their fans for the FIS Winterstart World Cup running November 30 to December 8, when U.S. downhill superstar Lindsey Vonn will attempt to extend her 9-race winning streak at the scenic resort. The Winterstart World Cup committee is promising a robust line up of animation and vibrancy in celebration of the continuing success of Canada’s only FIS World Cup Downhill and Super G events.
Santa Claus returns to Banff on December 7, leading the annual Parade of Lights down Banff Avenue to cap off a fun-filled day of Christmas in the Rockies celebrations featuring family-friendly events throughout the town.
Shortly after the Christmas holidays, the third-annual Banff National Park SnowDays festival runs January 11 through February 9. In addition to the ever-popular Ice Magic Festival which will be celebrating its 20th anniversary this winter, SnowDays organizers will be promoting some very special (and still secretive!) new events to round out the favourites, including the popular Mountain Adventure Weekend and Take It To The Street ball hockey tournament.
The SnowDays opening weekend also coincides with TSN’s Dominion All-Star Curling Skins Game presented by Pinty’s at The Fenlands Banff Recreation Centre, January 11-12.
