Winter Interpretation Program

“The Best of Banff National Park” - Interpretive Programs & Talks

Experience Banff National Park through the eyes and ears of those that know the park the best. From late December 2009 to mid-April 2010, Banff Heritage Tourism and its various partners are hosting a series of interpretive presentations and programs that showcase what makes Banff National Park such a special place. All programs are FREE and everyone is welcome. We hope you enjoy Banff National Park as much as we enjoy sharing our stories.

All programs begin at 7:00 pm

RCMP Red Serge Program

Location: The Fairmont Banff Springs, Conference Centre Theatre – 405 Spray Avenue

Dates: December 24, January 14 & 28, February 11 & 25, March 11 & 25 and April 8

Constable Howard Cann of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police will reflect on his 18 years of service while discussing the history of RCMP, the significance of the iconic Red Serge uniform, and the role the RCMP currently plays in the national park.

Enjoy a weekly presentation with Pam Manning, a local guide and winner of the 2009 Banff Heritage Interpreter Award, as she discusses early snow travel in Canada's past, the origins of the snowshoe, First Nations history, fur trapper’s stories, and our local legend’s exploits throughout Banff National Park.

Mountain WIT – “IMAGINaNATION!”

Celebrate 125 years of National Parks in Canada with Mountain WIT, Parks Canada's award-winning theatre troupe, as they animate this family-friendly 40 minute journey through the mosaic of our country's most treasured places. Full of colourful characters, music and laughs, this show is a treat for all ages.

Friends of Banff – “Winter Survivalists”

Location: Banff Park Lodge – 222 Lynx Street

Enjoy an informative and entertaining discussion with a professional interpreter where you can learn more about winter wildlife, wildlife habitats and some of the adaptations it takes to survive during the winter months.

First Nations Fireside Chat

Location: Fox Hotel & Suites – 461 Banff Avenue

Dates: December 28, January 11 & 25, February 8 & 22, March 8 & 22 and April 5

Join Tony Starlight, a proud member of the Tsuu T’ina tribe and Dené Nation, as he provides a fascinating personal reflection on a life spent in Banff National Park while discussing the significance of the park with the local First Nations people.

Retired Park Warden Speaker Series

Location: Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies – 111 Bear Street

“Keeping Watch in the Back-Country”

On January 7, join Don Mickle and Rod Wallace, Cultural Resource Specialists in Banff National Park and Jasper National Park respectively, as they provide their tremendous insight into what it was like to be a back-country park warden whose responsibility it was to patrol the most remote areas of the national parks.

“Banff National Park: On the Wild Side”

On February 4, join Eric and Rosemary Langshaw as they share their personal stories from studying and learning about the wildlife that call the mountain parks home. If you have ever wanted to know more about our wildlife, this entertaining introduction is for you.

"Mountain Rescue"

On March 4, enjoy a slide show and discussion with retired Park Wardens Dale Portman and Kathy Calvert where you'll learn about the history of mountain rescue in the mountain parks and gain unique insight into what it meant to be a Park Warden in Banff National Park.
