What is a Dragon Boat (and Dragon Boating for that matter)?

A dragon boat is about 12 meters (40ft) in length, with a dragon head at the front and a dragon tail at the back. The boat holds 20 paddlers, one drummer, and one steer-person. Dragon Boats are very stable, so it is easy for beginners to participate. The Dragon Boat is often divided into 3 sections; the Pacers or Strokes, the Engine Room and the Rockets. Imagine 20 paddlers, paddling in unison to the rhythm of the drum, striving to be the first to cross the finish line. Now imagine the energy and the roar from the audience, cheering and motivating their team onwards.

For the first time ever, Banff Lake Louise Tourism has officially launched Dragon Boats on Lake Minnewanka. Now it's your turn! If you have already registered your team, it's time to get those paddles in the water. The Dragon Boats are moored at the Brewster docks at Lake Minnewanka for practicing and we can coordinate 2 – 3 training sessions for you and your team with experienced Dragon Boaters.

To arrange your training sessions, please email micaela@banfflakelouise.com or call (403) 762-0284 with your preferred dates and times and we will make arrangements with Alberta Dragon Boat Race Foundation to come out to Lake Minnewanka.

If you prefer your training sessions closer to Calgary, the Alberta Dragon Boat Race Foundation has boats moored at Chestermere Lake. To coordinate these sessions please contact Theresa@calgarydragonboat.com or call (403) 540-3115.

2008 Banff National Park Dragon Boat Festival Registration Fee: All categories $787.50 (GST included)

Cancellation Policy: Registration fee is non-refundable.
