About Banff National Park

Established 125 years ago, Canada’s first national park is toasting what we have all inherited as Canadians – 6,641 km2 of spectacular scenery, historic sites. and cultural treasures. What began with a bubbling hot spring has grown to protect 277,000 km2 of Canada in a national system of parks, historic sites and marine conservation areas. We are the beneficiaries of these significant preservation and conservation efforts.

“This is landscape full of possibilities. It’s as full of possibilities now as it was back in the late 1880’s. For today, Parks Canada is reaching more people, setting the stage for more memorable experiences, and becoming more relevant to Canadians as we continue to protect our heritage, celebrate our history, and inspire greater exploration, renewal, and imagination,” said Canada’s Environment Minister and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, Jim Prentice.
