Road Race wraps up a rocking weekend of riding in Banff

Banff Lake Louise Tourism would like to thank all the sponsors, volunteers, residents of Banff, the RCMP, the Town of Banff, Parks Canada, and EMS for helping make the first annual Banff National Park Bike Fest a spectacular success.

Thousands of people lined the streets to cheer on over 200 racers from across North America. Kicking off the weekend with the Husky Individual Time Trial under sunny skies, racers paced around Lake Minnewanka as they suffered high-elevations and steep climbs on the 21 kilometre route.Check out the Time Trial photo gallery to see just how hard the racers were working.

The evening Criterium races launched with over 80 kids participating in the Remax Little Crits with big smiles and doting parents. The energy was buzzing as many kids made their debut by preceding the pros on the Criterium race course. Following the kids came the HooDoo Cruiser Crit participants; a colourful parade racing three laps around the Criterium course sporting Hawaiian hula skirts, balloons, and gold lame - a sight that was not to be missed. View the images in the Criterium photo gallery to see what we mean.

The evening continued with fast-paced action in the Criterium as riders circled the 0.7km course at high-speeds. The elite men’s category saw over 80 racers blazing through the tight corners in an exciting display of adrenaline-fuelled skill.

The final event of the weekend was the Tunnel Mountain Road Race. The race, open only to the Elite Stage Race riders, was led by local RCMP in a “rolling enclosure” and featured a number of courageous breakaways. Over 50 volunteers helped to ensure a safe race for the riders and got to enjoy curb-side seats for the race. The Road Race photo gallery has plenty of images of both the men's and women's events.

Be sure to mark your calendars to join us for next year's race June 20 and 21, 2009.
