2008 Ice Magic

Ice Magic weekend provides a full, fun, fascinating schedule of activities to appeal to the whole family. Below is the schedule from the 2008 Festival to provide an idea of the wide range of things to see and do. This schedule will be updated as the 2009 event approaches, so be sure to check back!

International Ice Sculpture Team Competition – NICA Sanctioned Event

Renowned International accredited teams have 15 blocks of ice and 34 hours of carving time over a 2½ day time frame to create themed masterpieces.

Ice Playground and live ice carving demonstration

Little Chippers Children’s Festival

Children have a chance to learn the art and science of ice carving first hand! Free hot chocolate, coffee and cookies, learn to drive a dog sled, interact with an interpretive Parks Canada Centre, face painting, walk the Wilson’s Mountain Sports and Samson’s Mall Enchanted Forest ice maze and more!! Fun for the entire family!

Ice Carving Demonstration

A 30 minute interpretive hands on ice carving demonstration by Ice Magic’s lead Judge and internationally renowned ice carver Dan Rebholz.

Snow Queen String Quartet

NEW this year in celebration of The Banff Centre’s 75th Anniversary. Snow Queen musical adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's beloved fairy tale. The Snow Queen, features Toronto-based actor-director Alon Nashman and the Lily String Quartet. Developed as a result of a two-week residency at The Banff Centre, the 55-minute work is an adaptation of the late Canadian composer Patrick Cardy's score, created for string quartet and narrator.

Based on Andersen's classic tale of adventure - a girl's quest to find her best friend, who is under the spell of the Snow Queen - the work is set in an enchanted world. The production is designed to engage youngsters in the magic of classical music and storytelling.

One Hour, One Carver, One Block

A chance to watch professional carvers in a speed event turning one block of ice into art forms! Complimentary wine tasting by Tinhorn Creek Vineyards, appetizer sampling, hot chocolate and popcorn.
