Banff National Park, Alberta – Banff Lake Louise Tourism, in partnership with Banff Heritage Tourism, has developed a program to capitalize on Banff’s rich and colourful history. Beginning in mid-July and running through Labour Day, there will be a Living History Interpreter roaming Banff Avenue striking up conversations with visitors and sharing stories about life in Banff National Park.
Performed by Kevin Gedling of Banff, the interpreter will be representing different character forms dressed in full costume of some of Banff's most colourful personalities, including Bill Peyto and a turn-of-the-century Swiss Mountain Guide. The costumes are being provided by Parks Canada.
“We wanted to develop a fun and interactive program where our visitors can learn some interesting facts about our town and surrounding area. The goal of the project is to create another authentic and enjoyable visitor experience. We're always looking for ways to ensure that our guests know they are in a national park and the benefits that provides," explains Grant Canning, Executive Director of Banff Heritage Tourism. “The summer of 2007 is being done on a trial basis, but if the program proves to be successful and is well received by our guests, we would look at making it a permanent part of the overall Banff experience,” adds Canning.
The living history interpreter would also provide an opportunity to answer general questions about Banff, for example, directions, places to visit and things to do while striving to remain in character. The character would provide an excellent opportunity for visitors to stop and pose for photos, learn about other interpretive programs in the area and how they can discover more about the history of the park.
“This program seeks to engage visitors and inform them of the importance of the park’s culture and heritage. At the same time it seeks to cross-promote existing in-resort activities that are attractive to this aspect of our destination” says Stu Back, Manager of In-Resort Services for Banff Lake Louise Tourism.
