Banff National Park, Alberta – spring in Banff brings a new environmental action plan to be launched during the popular Heat-Up the Rockies event March 31, 2007. The aim of Towards Zero Waste Events in Banff is to maximize the number of resources that can be recovered for reuse, recycling and composting at major events in Banff National Park.
The partnership between Banff Special Events, the Town of Banff and the Bow Valley Waste Management Commission will encourage Heat-Up the Rockies event sponsors, vendors and partners to commit to the Towards Zero Waste Events plan by following best practice guidelines that will virtually eliminate generating garbage that must be land filled. Gourmet Grill food vendors, including the Bison Mountain Bistro, the Elk & Oarsman, Tommy’s, Saltlik and the Wild Flour Bakery will show their support of the Towards Zero Waste movement by eliminating the use of polystyrene or plastic plates, cups, and cutlery and using paper based and compostable food-ware at the event.
Town of Banff environmental services coordinator Chad Townsend stated “this is a great first step for Banff events to go green; I hope that we can use Heat-Up the Rockies as a model to encourage other events and businesses in Banff to rethink the waste they produce in our National Park.”
The Heat-Up the Rockies street party will take place on Banff’s Bear Street and in the Bear Street parking lot. Festivities include a three-on-three street hockey tournament, climbing wall, street performers, live music and a selection of Banff’s best at the Gourmet Grill area. Resource recovery stations (special blue bins) will be placed at various locations and teams of Zero Waste volunteers will be on site to promote awareness and help people understand the new initiative.
