Banff Squirrel takes over the world

Just in case you have no idea what I'm talking about here's the photo of the Squirrel Portrait that has the world going nuts.

That one photo has popped up everywhere since becoming the photo of the day at National Geographic... The Globe and Mail National, CBC, Ottawa Citizen, National Post, AOL News, Minneapolis Star Tribune, the UK Sun, Yahoo! News, the UK's Daily Mail & Telegraph even hosted the photo on their front pages. With appearances as far away from the Canadian Rockies as Italy, Australia and South Korea, this little fellow has the whole world chuckling.

Not only have the news channels gone squirrely, but BuzzFeed.com has done a 'create your own crasher squirrel' application allowing squirrel lovers everywhere to create their own squirrel invasion photos!

Twitter has been a buzz with comments about this phenomena... comments such as:

@NathanDFrench: "is it just me or does everyone have the Banff Squirrel as their background?" @irisdias: "The Banff squirrel is everywhere today. I want to take lessons from his publicist." @Libarbarian: "Squirrel, squirrel, shake your bushy tail... Net goes nuts over Banff's scene-stealing squirrel"

Looking for away to follow the adventures of this curious creature?

What about the photo takers?

This is all well and good (that you guys got so much mileage out of a funny photo), but what about the people who actually took the photo? What did THEY get out of this? It was THEIR photo, so they should be reaping SOME rewards for all of this. You jumped on a superb marketing opportunity brought about by some tourists. Don't those people get some sort of consideration for having taken the photo that started it all???

Congratulations!

I love your campaign! I think it's very authentic, fun and engaging. I'm happy this little incident happened and it's just what you needed for a successful social media campaign. Carry on the buzz - it will be a challenge.

I wrote a blog post about it on my website.

Squirrel makes our day!

After our family vacation to Banff this summer and taking many pictures of the ground squirrels in our campground, we loved the "Squirrel Crasher" photo. I clipped it out of our local newspaper and posted it on our refridgerator. Now, everytime we open the fridge he makes us smile!

Thanks for sharing this photo with the world!

This picture went on my dreamboard!

Aloha from Lulu's Surf Bar on Waikiki Beach!

This really is a remarkable picture... I saw it last night at my hotel in Honolulu, along with more time lapsed pictures to proof that this is the real deal and not some photoshop scam. ...It's always great to see Canadian content abroad!

That's quite something isn't it? And it'll make that couple smile for many years on in.

So while I was boogie boarding in Waikiki waiting to catch a wave, I started thinking... We all need to have moments like this... Moments that'll make you smile and make you realize why you do the things that you do. Why you set goals, why you run your own business, and why your clients come back to purchase more products and services from you.
