From Smelly Springs to the World's Finest National Park
Walking up the trail towards the Cave and Basin National Historic Site you cannot help notice the pungent smell of rotten eggs in the air. Peehew! Hard to believe that it was this smell that lead to the creation of our National Parks in Canada. In 1883 three railways workers from the Canadian Pacific Railway came across the Hot Springs on the lower slopes of Sulpher Mountain and the events from that discovery lead to the creation of Canada’s First and finest National Park. So you might be wondering what those events were? How did those hot spring waters turn into our National Park? Well…I think I will leave that for you to discover.
The Cave and Basin Offers visitors and locals insight into the origins of our National Park and the era in which it was created. With stunning views, turn of the century architecture, interactive displays and board walks, you will leave with a much deeper understanding and relationship with Banff. The site is open year round and can be discovered on your own or with a guided tour.
The great thing about Banff is the balance that has been created between it’s historic sites, a great destination resort and the surrounding mountain landscape. Where else can you experience high end shopping and dining and then be immersed in the wilds of the mountains in just minutes. Where else can you surround yourself in rich culture, history, events and pristine mountain wilderness and still have a piping hot latte in your hand?
Speaking of Lattes, I think it is time for one!
