Hiking To Helen Lake And Dolomite Pass

Add to my moments

Aug 19, 2013

One of the 'Classic Hikes' in Banff and Lake Louise, the trek to Helen Lake and Dolomite Pass is on a beautiful trail with a great variety of views, some amazing wildflowers and quite a few critters that you may encounter on your hike. We are especially fond of the marmots and pikas that live in the area, but you can also see some eagles and ground squirrels. The area can be active with bears as well, so please be 'bear aware' on your hikes.

Jeff and Shirley The Dog Blogger joined a nice group of hikers, including local photographer extraordinaire, Paul Zizka, on a pretty summer day in the park. Enjoy the video (above) we hope to see you hiking in Banff National Park sometime soon!

Trek Details

-The trailhead for Helen Lake is located on the Icefields Parkway (HWY 93 N), about a half hour drive from Lake Louise. You will see the Helen Lake sign on the right hand side, just before you reach Bow Lake. No real steep sections on the trail. If you plan on swimming in Helen Lake, prepare to get some goosebumps, because it's chilly.

-The hike to Helen Lake is 12 km's round-trip, add another 5 or so km's for the added trek up Dolomite Pass.
