Welcome G7 Summit Media Delegates

Here in Banff and Lake Louise, our vision is to Lead Tourism for Good. This is one of the world’s most iconic tourist destinations. It’s stunningly beautiful and very popular – and this place is under pressure.

If we’ve learned anything, it’s that we must all work together to steward this place. Government, tourism organizations, businesses, locals, media, and visitors all have a role to play.

Facts about Banff and Lake Louise:

  • ICONIC: Banff, Canada's oldest national park, is one of the world's most iconic tourist destinations and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site stretching for more than 6,000 kms.
  • VISITORS: Banff and Lake Louise welcomes more than 4 million visitors each year.
  • RESIDENTS: Banff's permanent population is 8400 residents.
  • TOURISM: 90% of Banff's economy is involved in tourism.
  • INDIGENOUS: What is today known as "Banff National Park" continues to be a sacred gathering place for many First Nations.
  • SUSTAINBILITY: The impact of visitors for things like carbon emissions and waste to landfill is wildly disproportionate to residents. Everyone has a role to play in stewarding this place.

Story Ideas:

  • How Banff is rewriting radical collaboration and charting a sustainable future.
  • How and why visitors to Banff and Lake Louise are being asked to be more ‘responsible’.
  • An innovative new reusable cup program tackles waste management in a tourism town.
  • Why Indigenous Tourism is Reconciliation in action.
  • Banff has a car problem, not a people problem.
