Our Tremendous Beauty: Indigenous Tourism in Banff and Lake Louise
In the spring of 2024, Banff & Lake Louise Tourism (BLLT) embarked on the journey of discovery and engagement to develop a strategic and resilient plan to support the growth of Indigenous tourism in what is today known as Banff National Park.
We have looked at the complexities of the different nations who have relationships with this land as being difficult. This is true, but this is also our greatest strength. We believe there is tremendous beauty in the complexity.
BLLT recognizes that since time immemorial, Indigenous people have stewarded the lands now encompassed by Banff National Park. Not being able to connect with Mother Earth and these lands in traditional ways is a source of pain and loss.
BLLT’s intention is to support the sharing of Indigenous stories, language, and culture on these traditional lands. We intend to be students, connectors, advocates, mentors, and friends.
The true stories of Indigenous Peoples are essential to the experiences of Banff National Park. These are not our stories to tell. But we can help them be told.
