Where to Eat Like a Celebrity in Banff and Lake Louise

With glacier-fed lakes, towering peaks and charming towns that sweep you off your feet, it’s easy to see why filmmakers and celebrities (from Marilyn Monroe to Sean Connery, Bryan Cranston and Luke Combs) choose Banff and Lake Louise as the perfect place for their Hallmark movie, or foodie-holiday.

Whether you’re shooting scenes or soaking up the scenery, a full belly is essential for any mountain adventure.

So, get ready to dip fondue, sip cocoa at the summit, and dine with 360° views.

Here are the best places for set-jetting at Oscar-worthy Banff and Lake Louise restaurants, as seen on TV and your favourite movies.

Jump ahead to the on-screen moments at each location:

The Grizzly House

Famous for its exotic fondue and eclectic 1970s decor, this cozy little gem (which originated as a disco dance hall) has maintained its must-visit status in Banff National Park for decades.

On a recent visit, Jonathan Thompson of Discovery Channel's Adventure Cities could hardly contain his excitement as he indulged in a steaming pot of cheesy goodness. “This buffalo is amazing,” said Thompson, beaming delightedly.

Both meat-eaters and vegetarians can dip into something delicious at Grizzly House.

Feeling game? Explore a variety of meats from buffalo to alligator and even rattlesnake.

Or keep things traditional with chicken, Alberta beef or a selection of fresh vegetables, all paired perfectly with gooey gruyère.

Of course, you’ll want to save room for dessert.

As Canadian journalist Brandy Yanchyk discovered, it’s hard to find words that do justice for banana, strawberries, juicy pineapple and chocolate wafers dipped in decadent Belgian chocolate, but “mmmmm…” is certainly one of them!

Sky Bistro

Everyone deserves their main character moment, and what better set-jetting setting for yours to take place than at 2,276 meters (7,486 feet)?

Take the scenic Banff Gondola to the top of Sulphur Mountain and make your way to Sky Bistro.

From landmark to Hallmark, you’ve just recreated a scene in A Winter Getaway (and, coincidentally, arrived at one of the best restaurants in Banff and Lake Louise to dine with a view)!

Sky Bistro serves up unobstructed mountain vistas with a side of mouthwatering Canadian fare, unique cocktails, local brews and if you ask Courtney (played by Nazneen Contractor) and Joe (Brooks Darnell), a hot cocoa you just can’t miss!

360° Dome

Private. Luxurious. Pure magic.

The Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel (also known as the “Castle in the Rockies”) has perfected the recipe to make each guest feel like a celebrity dining, and its iconic 360° Dome is no exception.

Step inside this life-sized snow globe, located just behind the hotel, and you’ll be completely mesmerized at first by world-class views, then world-class flavours.

Gaze around at mountain valleys and admire every detail of the historic castle as you enjoy a sunrise breakfast, nightcap beneath the stars and everything in-between.

In Jonathan Thompson’s Discovery Channel Adventure Cities series, the travel expert ate his way through a “fabulous” 5-course tasting menu and was enchanted by the “incredible environment” as snowflakes flurried outside.

The 360° Dome is open year-round, so no matter when you visit, this unique dining experience in the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel belongs on your bucket list.

The Rundle Patio

This breathtaking patio can be found at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel and was recognized by Canada’s 100 Best with the “Best Patio Award 2024”.

But if you’ve seen A Winter Getaway (also a movie filmed at Sky Bistro, as mentioned earlier) you might recognize it for another exciting reason: here is where Courtney and Joe ate lunch after a day of skiing. Talk about Oscar-worthy!

The Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel is worthy of a visit in itself.

After you’ve wined and dined while surrounded by nature, explore the hotel’s hundred-year-old halls (just as Marilyn Monroe, Alec Baldwin, Michelle Pfeiffer and Queen Elizabeth once did!) and lose yourself in its timeless charm.

High Rollers Bowling & Beer Hall

Like any good Hallmark movie, some things are just better when cheesier.

Just ask Great Family Adventure stars Nick, Emily, Parker and Tucker, who couldn’t resist stopping in at High Rollers for mouthwatering, house made pizzas after an exciting day in the mountains.

As well as delicious pies, the family got a true taste of what makes Banff so special: its sense of community.

“It was pretty fun to have a moment being a part of the Banff community,” said Emily.

“There’s a DJ playing, there was beer, everyone’s eating good food.”

“And it was really cool to see the livelihood of the bowling alley!”

Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise

This past summer, actor Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad, Malcolm in the Middle) swapped the Hollywood Hills for a road trip through the Canadian Rocky Mountains with his wife Robin.

When they stopped for a stay at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, the couple were completely starstruck.

“When we arrived at astonishing Lake Louise, it took our breath away,” Cranston wrote on Instagram.

“The canoe ride across the lake was so peaceful and serene.”

And when they weren’t busy soaking up the scenery, Bryan and Robin could be found feasting their eyes on delicious menu items around the Fairmont Chateau (open all Winter), famous for its Afternoon Tea with idyllic lakefront views, chic cocktail bars and innovative culinary experiences.

Between the takes and tastings, your favourite celebrities can be found savouring every spare moment in the mountains.

“Banff was just majestic,” said Brooks Darnell, leading cast member in A Winter Getaway.

“The mountains just humble you so much, and you don’t realize how small you are until you see things like that.”

But Darnell isn’t the only star with lasting memories of Banff and Lake Louise.

Country singer Luke Combs came through town for a winter adventure with wife Nicole, later telling The Joe Rogan Experience, “I’ve never seen anything like it”.

Now that you’ve got the scoop on celebrity dining in Banff and Lake Louise, it’s time to take the stage in your own set-jetting adventure in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.
