Q: What is Skijoring?
A: Skijoring is a fast-paced winter sport that blends skiing with horseback riding and a whole lot of adrenaline. “Riders” tow skiers and snowboarders (the “Sliders”) along a snow-covered course. The sliders launch off jumps and perform tricks.
Skijoring is one of North America’s fastest-growing winter sports, showcasing speed, skill, and teamwork as horses, riders and sliders come together in a high-energy spectacle on snow.
Q: Where is the event taking place?
A: Skijoring has moved down Banff Avenue to the 200–300 block (between Banff High School and the Banff Visitor Centre).
The main viewing area will be in the Banff High School Field, rather than along Banff Avenue as in previous years. It's located on the corner of Banff Avenue and Wolf Street with a good view of the skijoring course along the west end of the field, there will be bleachers and a big screen to show replays and participant interviews. There will be portable toilets on the east side of the main viewing area.
The main viewing area will have a capacity limit. Gates open at 12:30pm, and the pre-show begins at 1pm. Head down early to guarantee your spot!
Q: What if there is no room in the Banff High School Field?
A: If the Banff High School Field reaches capacity, you can still enjoy the event indoors at local businesses livestreaming the shows. See the full list of participating locations above.
Q: What should I wear and/or bring?
A: Dress in layers and check the forecast - January in Banff is typically very cold. Hats, gloves or mittens, a warm jacket, and sturdy footwear are highly recommended.
Bring a blanket or seat cushion for the metal bleachers. If you’re watching from the Banff High School Field, pack a camp chair and an extra blanket.
The main viewing area in the Banff High School Field may be snowy or slippery, so consider wearing cleats if this is a concern for you.
And don’t forget to show off your signature SkijorStyle - yeti boots, vintage furs, trapper hats, neon, leather, fringe, or retro ski gear. There’s a half‑time fashion show with prizes on the line.
Q: Can I bring my pet?
A: Pets are prohibited in the main viewing area on the Banff High School Field. We ask that visitors do not bring their pets, to help ensure the safety and welfare of the horses and riders.
Visitors are reminded that in Banff National Park, pets must be kept on a leash and under your physical control at all times.
Q: Will the weather affect the event?
A: The Skijoring shows are weather dependent. Skijor Canada’s first priority is the safety of horses, riders, sliders, and spectators. In the event of adverse weather, including extreme cold or rain, Skijor Canada may need to modify or cancel all or part of the event. If that happens, we’ll provide the latest updates on our Facebook and Instagram or you can also contact our Visitor Services team directly via LiveChat.
