Mountain Biking the Tunnel Mountain Trails
One of Banff’s landmarks is the friendly summit of Tunnel Mountain, standing guard over the town of Banff and the Bow Valley beyond. The Park’s smallest official mountain is also home to a network of mountain bike trails – the go-to biking spot for local riders.
Rent a bike in downtown Banff and pedal your way up the pathways or paved roads to the top of tunnel. From here you can choose your own adventure, with bike trails ranging from beginner to advanced criss-crossing the mountain. Woops and hollers are highly encouraged as you wind your way along the stunning Tunnel Bench Loop or down the thrilling technical trails.

Local Tips
This is the kind of activity that’s all about wearing layers – start cool for an uphill pedal, and bring a windbreaker or rainjacket for the downhill riding.
For more technical rides, we recommend wearing gloves and opting for clothing that’s light but gives you full coverage (think pants and long-sleeved shirts).
Stop often for water breaks and the occasional snack to stay fueled up for longer rides.
Carry bear spray, respect trail signs and stick to maintained trails to protect the sensitive flora and fauna of the park.
